Honouring Margaret Bruhns passing

Published Fri 05 Apr 2024

Margaret Bruhns ... BlackStick from 1967 to 1973  ... that I know of ...may have been more before 1967 to Cologne, Germany tour but ....

Margaret passed away on the 23rd March and her Memorial Service April 2nd at the Beckenham Bowling Club, where she had been an competitive bowling member.  Marg was 81 and always will be remembered for her joy and fun in any team or event that she was part of and a very good Defender and Fullback too of course.

Margaret toured with Pat Barwick in both 1971 in NZ for the IFWHA International Tournament in Auckland where 19-20 countries took part, and in 1973 a long tour through Canada, UK, Holland and South Africa ... being away for 9 -10 weeks.  Marg cracked a bone in her foot in England on that last tour and had to sit out a few games at the start but played later on the tour, and in the two test matches against South Africa.

Margaret came to Canterbury from the strong Eastern Southland Hockey region and played for Carlton Ladies Hockey Club during her hockey years here in Christchurch.  This was perhaps one of our clubs first links with Southland that has continued through the decades with a number of players joining us from there.
