[]  ŌRUA PAEROA -  Click for sound recording Ōrua Paeroa is the name for the co-located campus site of Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School, with each school retaining its unique culture and identity and teaching spaces but sharing some key facilities including the Turf.  The schools were shifted and rebuilt following the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. All shared facilities are run by Spotless Services and any Turf users are required to attend a training session before they can be issued with a Building Access card (for Toilets) and Turf key.

LOCATION and PARKING

Ōrua Paeroa - CLICK HERE Located near the Taiora II Swimming pool and the site of the old QE2 complex. .  There is parking located in carpark near the old gymnastics gym

NAME MEANING AND HISTORY-  Ōrua Paeroa was a Māori kaika (home) at North New Brighton near to Travis Wetland situated on the site of present day QEII Park. This complex was the site of the 1974 Commonwealth Games hosted by Christchurch City.  QEII Park was demolished after extensive damage to the park following the 2011 earthquakes. Ōrua Paeroa was known as the place where strong east winds blew in from the sea. It was used primarily as a mahinga kai and abounded with eels and birdlife. In the past this wetland area had an opening that extended to the sea and Ngāi Tahu traditions recall that shark could be caught here at certain times of the year. The beach nearby was also known as Ōrua Paeroa.
